North East Federation on International Trade (NEFIT)

The North Eastern part of India is bounded by Myanmar in the east, Nepal and mainland India in the west, China and Bhutan in the North and Bangladesh in the South. The total land area of NE India is only 8% of the total land area of the country. Geographically, the region is closure to South and Southeast Asia. In fact, NE India is the only region of India that has shared land boundary with North, South and Southeast Asian countries. However, the region is only linked by a small 25km wide chicken neck like land corridor of Siliguri in West Bengal, with mainland of the country. The following are some of the facts and figure of the region:

	States: 1. Assam 2. Arunachal Pradesh 3. Meghalaya 4.Manipur 5. Mizoram 6. Nagaland 7. Sikkim 8. Tripura.
	Population: The total population of NE India is estimated to be around 43 – 44 Million ( Presently new census is going on)
	People: The region has the largest mixed origin group of people inhabited since time immemorial. Racially, they belonged to Aryans, Mongoloid, Dravidians, and Austric etc. Thus, NE India has a rich legacy of composite culture and civilization too.
	State Capitals: Assam – Dispur (Guwahati), Arunachal Pradesh – Itanagar, Meghalaya – Shillong, Manipur – Imphal, Mizoram – Aizawl, Nagaland – Kohima, Sikkim – Gangtok, and Tripura – Agartala.
	Major Airports: Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport (The only International airport in the entire region), Guwahati, Dibrugarh, Jorhat, Tezpur and Silchar in Assam, Umroi (Shillong) in Meghalaya, Lengpui (Aizawl) in Mizoram, Imphal in Manipur and Dimapur in Nagaland.
	Railways: There is vast Railways network in the North East. Guwahati is the Hub for the railways in the region. Rail network is expanding and eventually the region will be linked up between New Delhi, India and Hanoi in Vietnam via, Myanmar, Thailand and Laos. (Trans Asia Railway Network)
	Road Network. Major National Highways are NH-31, 31A, 36, 37, 39, 44, 52, 53, 54 etc. Currently Four lane East-West corridor national highway constructions is going on full swing, which is a part of Asian Highway no. 1 & 2 connecting Southeast and the far East.
